Training Courses
We run courses for adolescents and adults with additional learning needs. These are run as a group, but on special request, we can also run individual tuition tailored to the requirements of the student.
We run three different courses:
6-week Course on 'Horse Handling and Horse Care'
Weekly 2-hour sessions for 6 consecutive weeks.
Course fee €180, payable in full in advance.
A Certificate of Attendance will be issued to participants at the end of the course.
Course details:
This course is aimed at persons with additional learning needs who have an interest in farming and horses in particular. It aims to provide a solid introduction to this area of interest, and aims to prepare participants to possibly take up further training opportunities, volunteering or paid employment in this area. It also offers hands-on practical experience and equips participants with vocational skills in this area in a safe and supportive environment.
More specifically, the course promotes:
The training group will be small (6 participants maximum), and special attention will be given to everyone's particular learning style and pace of learning. There will be visual as well as written hand-outs for each training session. Every week, there will be an opportunity to recap and practise contents from previous weeks. A big element of this course will be hands-on practical work with the animals and tools.
Training assistants and care workers are welcome to accompany participants if appropriate.

Weekly 2-hour sessions for 6 consecutive weeks.
Course fee €180, payable in full in advance.

Over the 6 weeks of the course, participants get a thorough introduction to small scale farming and manual farming skills.
Participants learn about:
This course is based on real life practical manual farming skills with plenty opportunity for hands-on learning. Practical experience can include for example: hand milking, collecting fresh hen eggs, shearing a sheep, walking a pig, learning about donkey hoof care, growing vegetables.
More specifically, the course promotes:
The training group will be small (6 participants maximum), and special attention will be given to everyone's particular learning style and pace of learning. There will be visual as well as written hand-outs for each training session. Every week, there will be an opportunity to recap and practise contents from previous weeks. A big element of this course will be hands-on practical work with the animals and tools.

- A variety of farm animals: horses, donkeys, sheep, pigs, hens, geese, rabbits.
- Animal behaviour, animal health, animal habits and care needs, how to approach and handle these animals safely.
- Plants that can be grown on a farm for fodder and food.
- Typical manual farm skills such as mucking out, sweeping the barn, feeding and watering animals, animal grooming, field and garden tasks.

'Horse riding for beginners'
Weekly 1-hour sessions over a 6-week period
Course fee per person: €180, payable in full in advance
Course outline
Over the 6 weeks of the course, participants get a thorough introduction to riding a horse safely and confidently.
Participants learn about:
This course provides a safe, calm and supportive environment where riders can learn and progress at their own individual pace, with special focus on building confidence around and on the horse.
Riders will be supported to progress through the course according to their individual fitness and ability level.
At the end of the course, participants receive a certificate of attendance.
Course fee per person: €180, payable in full in advance
Course outline
Over the 6 weeks of the course, participants get a thorough introduction to riding a horse safely and confidently.
Participants learn about:
- What tack is needed to ride a horse.
- How to tack up a horse for riding correctly.
- How to mount a horse safely.
- Horse welfare issues when riding a horse.
- Correct riding posture.
- How to ride a horse independently in an enclosed arena.
- How to care for a horse before and after riding.
This course provides a safe, calm and supportive environment where riders can learn and progress at their own individual pace, with special focus on building confidence around and on the horse.
Riders will be supported to progress through the course according to their individual fitness and ability level.
At the end of the course, participants receive a certificate of attendance.
